MinIO provides an S3 compatible API that you may use to develop locally using Laravel's s3 file storage driver without creating "test" storage buckets in your production S3 environment. If you plan to use Amazon S3 to store files while running your application in its production environment, you may wish to install the MinIO service when installing Sail. Once you have started your containers, you may connect to the Meilisearch instance within your application by setting your MEILISEARCH_HOST environment variable to From your local machine, you may access Meilisearch's web based administration panel by navigating to in your web browser. If you chose to install the Meilisearch service when installing Sail, your application's docker-compose.yml file will contain an entry for this powerful search-engine that is compatible with Laravel Scout. By default, the Redis database is accessible at localhost port 6379. To connect to your application's Redis database from your local machine, you may use a graphical database management application such as TablePlus. Once you have started your containers, you may connect to the Redis instance within your application by setting your REDIS_HOST environment variable within your application's. This container uses a Docker volume so that the data stored in your Redis data is persisted even when stopping and restarting your containers. Your application's docker-compose.yml file also contains an entry for a Redis container. Or, you may connect as the root user, which also utilizes the value of your DB_PASSWORD environment variable as its password. By default, the MySQL database is accessible at localhost port 3306 and the access credentials correspond to the values of your DB_USERNAME and DB_PASSWORD environment variables. To connect to your application's MySQL database from your local machine, you may use a graphical database management application such as TablePlus. Once you have started your containers, you may connect to the MySQL instance within your application by setting your DB_HOST environment variable within your application's. The second is a dedicated testing database named testing and will ensure that your tests do not interfere with your development data. The first database is named using the value of your DB_DATABASE environment variable and is for your local development. In addition, the first time the MySQL container starts, it will create two databases for you. ![]() This container uses a Docker volume so that the data stored in your database is persisted even when stopping and restarting your containers. Of course, these steps assume that your existing local development environment allows you to install Composer dependencies:Īs you may have noticed, your application's docker-compose.yml file contains an entry for a MySQL container. If you are interested in using Sail with an existing Laravel application, you may simply install Sail using the Composer package manager. Installing Sail Into Existing Applications During installation, you will be asked to choose which Sail supported services your application will be interacting with. To learn how to create a new Laravel application, please consult Laravel's installation documentation for your operating system. Laravel Sail is automatically installed with all new Laravel applications so you may start using it immediately. Laravel Sail is supported on macOS, Linux, and Windows (via WSL2). The sail script provides a CLI with convenient methods for interacting with the Docker containers defined by the docker-compose.yml file. Sail provides a great starting point for building a Laravel application using PHP, MySQL, and Redis without requiring prior Docker experience.Īt its heart, Sail is the docker-compose.yml file and the sail script that is stored at the root of your project. ![]() Laravel Sail is a light-weight command-line interface for interacting with Laravel's default Docker development environment. Anchor your safe room to a proper foundation for your geographic location. Here are some basic guidelines from this publication. Whether building a stand-alone storm shelter or retrofitting a safe room in your house, the Federal Emergency Management Association’s (FEMA’s) booklet, Taking Shelter from the Storm: Building a Safe Room for your Home or Small Business (FEMA P-320), covers everything you need to know to follow the ICC 500 standards, and even includes construction plans. ![]() Make sure to follow ICC 500 standards when building your foundation. But even if tested and approved for missile impact and wind pressure, a storm shelter is only as safe as its foundation is strong. A manufactured safe room generally includes everything except the foundation. A Prefabricated Safe RoomĪs an alternative to a site-built safe room, prefabricated storm shelters are commercially available-and in some areas, they’re more affordable. Here we offer some key ideas to consider when constructing your own storm shelter. ICC 500 is under review and revised requirements are set to be published sometime in 2020. A safe room constructed in accordance with the International Code Council’s Standard for the Design and Construction of Storm Shelters (ICC 500) should remain standing even when the rest of your home may be flattened or picked up and carried away. Having a well-constructed, dedicated safe room in your home will provide reliable protection for you and your family, and peace of mind along with it.Ī storm shelter or safe room is a hardened structure built to withstand high-velocity winds that accompany tornadoes and hurricanes, and the flying debris they can hurl at you. Many run to an interior room, hoping a space constructed of 2x4s and drywall will protect them from winds that exceed 100 miles per hour. Whether you live in a coastal region, prone to tropical storms and hurricanes, or in the Midwest, always on the alert for a tornado to strike, you want a safe place in your house to retreat to during extreme wind events. Hang a sliding door and then hire an electrician to run power to the storm shelter for lights and outlets.Ĭonsiderations for Building a Storm Shelter.Allow the concrete to cure for 24 hours, then strip away the wooden form.Smooth the concrete on top of the storm shelter with a steel float.Vibrate the concrete throughout the pour to eliminate voids and air bubbles.Use a concrete pump to fill the form with small-aggregate concrete.Install metal rebar throughout the form to reinforce the concrete.Build a wooden form around the excavated hole to create the walls and ceiling of the concrete storm shelter.Cut out and remove the concrete slab from the garage floor, and dig down 28 inches. You would need to do this if retrofitting a bathroom or closet, as well. I remember learning about the objectives you can go for in Space Cadet but I was blown away by all the different systems/table features/etc. I think the depth that pinball tables (I'm not enough of a buff to feel comfortable calling them "pins". This is exactly why I bought Pinball FX3, my local barcade got a Medieval Madness table and I remember liking it as a kid, and I wanted to learn more about how the game works beyond "put a few quarters in and hit some flippers until stuff happens", without having to keep pumping fifty cents in time after time. It's an adventure game with pinball segments. Yoku's Island Express is also interesting, it's several years old now, and widely ported. But like a lot of video pinball, at some point it is too much a game of skill, and you can have epic ball times and then it's kind of boring. I was deeply amused when I got a ball stuck and had to use the 'call attendant feature' and got some sort of bonus. In terms of video pinball that's not virtual physical tables, Demon's Tilt is fairly new, and pretty fun. ![]() ![]() Advancing the plot usually results in good scores. Most games you can do a good job of advancing the plot by just shooting for the flashing shots, but maybe avoid center shots, unless you have a good setup, because a missed shot may be hard to recover, although the trolls can be hard to recover from a hit too. Personally, I like the very end of the alphanumeric era, right before DMDs came and started stopping the game to show you animations, but collectors seem to prefer DMD games. Probably fiddly to keep working with all the dodadds though. MM has always been on the higher end (or at least for the last long while). > I would love to own a table but they're shockingly expensive, maybe someday! I would love to own a table but they're shockingly expensive, maybe someday! Most tables I've played will suck up a credit in a few flips in ways that seem pretty unfair, but Medieval Madness seems pretty fair. ![]() Most of the time when I lose balls, I know exactly the wrong thing I did (in particular, trying to hit the castle gate or the trolls without multiball is pretty dangerous). Medieval Madness is unique among nearly all the tables I've played in that it doesn't bullshit you much. So overall, digital pinball is cool in my book, if flawed. Even still, I hadn't ever seen half the stuff that I got to see while playing the virtual version, and I've taken some of that knowledge into the real world when I visit the bar where that table lives. But I can generally go for a pretty long session on a single credit. the table I play on has a high score of about 190,000,000 so I have a long way to go to have a chance at putting in my initials. My best Medieval Madness score is something like 50,000,000. It's nowhere near as fun as real pinball, but the one thing that I found really cool was that I was able to play the game on "training mode" and get a better sense for the different things I could do and how to set up certain situations. I could complain about all kinds of things about PinballFX3, it's very emblematic of the problems with modern gaming, but the tables themselves are pretty good recreations. I recently bought the version for Pinball FX3, and it's not half bad. Medieval Madness is my all time favorite table. That’s all you will need for a PC and another platform like a gaming console, but we would have loved to see more ports such as usable USB connectors. The Samsung Odyssey G5 only has DisplayPort 1.2 and HDMI 2.0 for video input, along with a single USB 2.0 slot for service such as updating the firmware. That’s fine since having LEDs means that the price is higher, but they are useful if you want to set a theme or bias lighting for your setup. It is also worth noting that the Samsung Odyssey G5 doesn’t have the Infinity core Lighting feature of the G7 and G9 monitors. You can use a VESA mount, but the high placement means that the center of gravity is off so it can tilt down if the arm isn’t tightened properly. Thankfully, it has VESA bolt holes, unlike the C27RG50 which is excellent for gaming, but severely limited in this regard. One of the main weaknesses of the Samsung Odyssey G5 is it only offers tilt for ergonomics, so you have to exactly center it to your seat to get the most out of the curved screen. The joystick also doubles as the power button, but it’s not easy to mistakenly power down the screen due to the menu’s layout. The brand has been doing this for most of their monitors, so most of the monitors are easier to use, especially in the budget categories. The Samsung Odyssey G5 is controlled by a single joystick with a small indicator LED just under the Samsung name on the bottom bezel. The only weakness in this aspect is the hinge on the stand which isn’t firm enough to hold the monitor permanently when it is angled downward. There are no cosmetic defects on the monitor and its plastic panels don’t feel thinner compared to its premium siblings. The Samsung Odyssey G5 is also made mostly of plastic, but it feels solid and reliable overall while wobbling is minimal. The base takes up more space than what’s necessary, but it gives the slightly larger monitor more footing. However, it is still chunky from the side since it has a 1000r curve which is considerably deeper than all the other curved monitor options in the market. This model is also slightly smaller and lighter than the G7 variant since it doesn’t have the same stand. ![]() The display isn’t bezel-free, but the thin borders sit almost flush against the outer layer. The monitor has a carbon fiber-like texture on its shell, and it’s mostly finished in matte black which is easier to maintain. ![]() I don't know how I can connect an optical out (that looks like a standard headphone jack) to a stereo in.The Samsung Odyssey G5 looks identical to its G7 upperclassman, but it is noticeably lacking a few extra features. My graphic card is a Geforce 330M, in case that would help.ĮDIT: Ok I now realized (after looking in the monitor manual) that apparently the monitor requires a provided stereo cable to be plugged in as well as an HDMI for both video and audio.now my laptop has a combined headphone out / optical out port but when I use the monitor's stereo cable for this, there is no sound from its speakers (apart from some noise). I have no idea what to do.and Samsung tech support was useless so I would greatly appreciate any help. And when I click "Test" for my monitor speakers, the green bars show up but no sound comes out. The strange thing is that in Control Panel, it lists my laptop's built-in speakers as using RealTek Audio drivers while the monitor speakers are using Nvidia High Def Audio. I tested the speakers while using the monitor as a TV (hooked up to cable) and the speakers work fine. The picture and display work fine, but there is no sound coming from the monitor speakers. Its plugged into the first HDMI port on my monitor (labeled DVI, whereas the second port is labeled ARC). ![]() I have the monitor connected using the HDMI cable that came with it. I just recently bought a Samsung T23A950 Monitor/TV (see link below) to hook up to my Sony F series laptop. Here’s a look at the trailhead entrance in the daylight I got out and walked around to find the start of the trailhead, and it started to snow. I sat in my truck and ate my sandwich and people watched as I jotted down the day’s notes in my journal. It’s currently spring and because it was so late in the season I was worried for their safety, but they weren’t the only ones doing this: I saw several more parties venture out onto the ice, and all left unscathed. Sylvan Lake appeared frozen, and I was astonished to see a family, 2 parents with young kids, walking single-file over the ice. I saw them with boxed up meals, lining up to receive them and eating them in their vehicles before driving off. I finally found a spot I could back into, and realized why the lot was full: the local police were handing out food and supplies (laundry detergent) to local Lakota. The dirt lot was inaccessible due to mud, and there seemed to be an awful lot of people walking around. I drove around looking for a spot, only to find the parking lot almost full. I paid the $20, which gave me entrance to the park for 1-7 days, and drove to the Sylvan Lake picnic area. It said curfew was 10pm-6am (strictly enforced) but other than that, no rules on sleeping in my truck. There was an information pamphlet, and I scoured it, looking for information on camping, or if I could stay overnight and boondock. I had wanted to ask if it was ok to sleep in my vehicle overnight, but there was no one at the Ranger Station. ![]() I stopped at the Ranger Station to pay the entrance fee, and was surprised to find it was $20 (that seems kind of steep for a day visit). I’m hoping they were closed because it’s off season, and not due to Covid. I was surprised at how many establishments in South Dakota were closed. Once in the Black Hills I stopped at a Subway to get a sandwich, and a Starbucks to get my mug. It started out with lots of snow, but by the time I made it to Custer State Park the snow had ceased. The drive from North Dakota got easier as the miles went on. Some more features that are worth mentioning: While Sequel Pro is still overwhelming with the requests for MySQL 8 support, TablePlus has it already. They are also very responsive to the feature request and bug report. TablePlus releases a new update every week with a lot of new features and bug fixes. However, you can not edit your personal keyboard shortcut for now as it’s locked. TablePlus assigns every function with a combination of shortcut keys so that you can navigate and take action faster. This feature works perfectly well in TablePlus, you can open as many filters as you want (I’m using the happy version, for the starter version, it’s limited to only 2 filters) and run them at the same time.Īvoiding using mouse or trackpad and keeping your hands always on the keyboard is vital to boosting my productivity. Sequel Pro users have been requesting multiple filters feature since 2013 but there’s no sign of implementation until now. In Sequel Pro, you can only use one filter at a time. Type my keyword in and TablePlus will automatically lookup from the database, table, schema, view, function… You can expect something like a Spotlight Search of macOS. One of the features I love the most in TablePlus is the ability to quickly open anything with the shortcut cmd + P. It’s also easier to navigate in the app than in Sequel Pro. Just in my feeling, the UI set for TablePlus is nicer than Sequel Pro. For me, TablePlus provides exactly what it means for a quick edit. In Sequel Pro, if you want to edit a data cell, it will pop up an editing box, and that takes a little more time. The spreadsheet-like view allows you to edit the table directly without having to write queries. One of my favorite examples is the inline edit. TablePlus just takes into account so many little things that happen when you work with databases, which means, the team really pay attention to the details and the experience is very intuitive. ![]() You can see clearly while browsing the database, switching between two tables would take a couple seconds for Sequel Pro with a loading sign. It’s fast to launch and doesn’t leave much memory footprint. TablePlus was built on top of Swift, Objective-C, C/C++, Perl for OSX allowing the app to take advantage of the native elements of the system to provide a very fast experience. I can use it to manage databases, tables, structures, indexes… For me, it provides a well-rounded solution to work with MySQL. It’s very easy to set up and get direct access to the MySQL databases on local and remote servers. It’s fast, easy to use, stable, and open source. I work with MySQL a lot, and I indeed need a really good client for MySQL. ![]() So I gave it a try and to my surprise, TablePlus is such a brilliant app that boosts my productivity so much. But recently, one of my friends recommended to try out TablePlus and he referred it as the best MySQL GUI Tool. I’ve been a loyal fan of Sequel Pro for almost 7 years and that was a fantastic experience. Because if I change nothing, I will learn nothing, or if I change too much at a time, that can potentially be a mess. ![]() Why I looked for an alternative?Įvery once in a while, I try to change a couple things when I work, that can be a new tool or a new technique. TablePlus is a modern, native SQL client with intuitive GUI tools to create, access, query & edit multiple relational databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite, Microsoft SQL Server, Amazon Redshift, MariaDB, CockroachDB, Vertica, and Redis. |
